The Layon Valley is a transitional space between the Mauges (the “Military Vendée”), and the Saumurois regions. This location is therefore enriched by the complimentary influences of both these regions, as well as with wine culture and trade, which was developed thanks to the channelling of the “Layon” river (late 18th century).
Mines, windmills, lime kilns, bridges, the Monsieur Canal, wine houses, washing plants, fountains… there are many historic avenues to explore!

The history of Anjou wines begins in the 7th century, with the creation of a vineyard around the Chalonnes/Loire castle. Benedictine and Augustinian monks, Henri II Plantagenêt, Count of Anjou and King of England, and even Dutch wine traders contributed over time to develop the reputation of this exceptional vineyard, the designations of which are as prestigious as they are evocative.

The Layon Valley is one of the rare regions to naturally produce botrytis, or grey mould. The river produces morning mist, and the hill’s Southwest orientation provides plenty of sunshine.
The Coteaux du Layon Registered Designations of Origin (the region’s main label) has been registered since 1950 and stretches over 1,200 hectares of land. The vines are planted on the hillside, and this sweet white wine is produced 100 % from the Chenin variety, goes wonderfully well with foie gras and desserts, and can also be served as an aperitif.
Thirty designations (red, rosé, dry white, sweet white, sparkling) are produced in the Coteaux du Layon region, making Anjou the largest vineyard in the Val de Loire!
